The Countdown

With only 72 days left until Cakewalk 2006, it's time to begin thinking about your contribution to this significant social event. There are so many directions you could go, so many concoctions you could make. Before you begin testing recipes, I just wanted to share a few terms and definitions with you.

Creamed butter: This does not refer to adding cream to your butter. Nor does it mean melted butter (cough, cough, Tim, cough). Creamed butter is simply the act of allowing your butter to soften before beating it smooth. This serves as a binding base for your dry ingredients. Also, unless a recipe calls for it, NEVER substitute margarine for butter. They are NOT the same.

Grease the pan: Grease is not a mysterious ingredient found in the car parts aisle. Grease refers to anything that will leave a light film of oil on your pan. Butter, margarine, Pam, vegetable oil and shortening are all acceptable forms of grease for baking pans.

Pre-heat: You would think this is self-explanatory. Yet most cooks ignore this simple rule of baking. Some recipes are low-maintenance and can handle going into a cold oven. But unless you're a professional, don't try this at home! You will always get better results by putting your pre-baked goods into a pre-heated oven. Pre-heating provides a more even baking experience. And please don't ever put a cake into the oven without pre-heating. Cakes are among the most delicate and difficult things to bake. Don't take chances.

That's all for today. I don't want to give you too much all at once and leave you feeling overwhelmed. There will be a quiz.

The Rumors are True

I will be participating in Cakewalk 2006.

I was unable to contribute last year due to unavoidable circumstances. I feel like 2005 was not complete. There is a hole left in my life, a void that can never be filled. Cakewalk 2006 will bring a joy and peace to my life...but I can never replace Cakewalk 2005. It's a bittersweet time for me. I look back on the past with sorrow, but know the true delight that lies ahead.

I quiver with anticipation.

The Latest - CWA's 2006 ("Cake Walk Awards") - Judges Needed!

Do you have an amazing love for baking... or perhaps just a love for consuming bake goods? Either way, you might be the perfect candidate to be a judge for the "CWA's" at Cakewalk 2006!
Applications due July 15th to be on this prestigous judging Panel!

Applications should entail a 100 word or less essay detailing why YOU should be chosen as a judge for this year's panel. Applications should be submited directly to the Cake Walk 2006 Blog for the reading enjoyment of others. Judges will be selected on the basis of the following criteria:
  • cake walk experience
  • cake baking trageties and triumphs (both of equal value)
  • experience of baked good consumption (the good, the bad, and the ugly)
  • creativity and witty humor
  • love of chocolate (ok, so this might not pertain to everyone)
  • ability to spread the word of Cakewalk 2006

More details about this year's location to be disclosed at a later time! Unfortunately, it looks as if we might not be able to secure the Reliant Arena.
